After the release of the new version of Android this week to Nexus devices, I discovered a nice feature called the ‘System UI Tuner’ which survived the jump from the preview release but is still hidden away in the OS.

This extra menu option lets you tweak what’s displayed in the status bar and also what you see in the quick settings below it.  Another nice feature lets you add an embedded battery percentage into the battery icon in the status bar.  You can also hide all current notifications & show battery as 100% on the device to help you make nice clean screen shots for the Google Play store!

This is just a quick post to outline how to get the new features and a few screen shots of what you can expect to see.

  • Pull down the notification shade & then the quick settings to display the settings cog in the top right
  • Hold down on the settings cog for about 7 seconds and when you let go you should get a toast message telling you you’ve successfully added the setting to the menu (NOTE: some people I spoke to said that they needed to open the settings menu first before this worked, but let me know if anyone has problems accessing the option this way in the comments)

  • Open the settings menu and scroll to the bottom where you’ll find the new option ‘System UI Tuner’ !

Enjoy!

UPDATE: You can also access the feature via ADB, see details here
